Lecturer’s profile: Hou is currently a research fellow and doctoral supervisor at the Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences; a chair professor of marine science at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; a recipient of the State Council special allowance (1993); and an academic leader in the field of research on upper ocean dynamics. He used to serve as Deputy Director of the Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences; a member of the expert group in marine technology under the “863” Program (National High Technology Research and Development Program of China); head of the special key project of the National Key R&D Program Marine Environmental Security Assurance; and chief scientist of the major project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Hou has presided over more than 40 projects, including the National Key R&D Program, the “863” Program, and the National Key Natural Science Foundation of China (and has so far undertaken 12 National Foundation projects), and published over 280 papers in important domestic and international journals, including more than 160 papers indexed by SCI. The paper titled Spatiotemporal characteristics of mesoscale ocean dynamics in offshore China and applications has won the first prize of 2013 Ocean Engineering Science and Technology Award, and has been ranked among Top Ten Sci-tech Achievements in Research on China’s Oceans and Lakes in 2013. Hou has also won the “863” Program Award for Outstanding Contribution to Marine Monitoring Technology (2001), a second prize of the Marine Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Award of the State Oceanic Administration (2003), a second prize of the National Award for Progress in Science and Technology (2005), a special prize of the Ocean Engineering Science and Technology Award (2016), the Pollyanna Chu Outstanding Teacher Award of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (2017), and a first prize of the Ocean Engineering Science and Technology Award (2023).
